Moving at the Holidays? Tips to Stay Sane

Moving in late November and throughout December can be tough if you celebrate the holidays. The holidays tend to be a busy time of year anyway because many people plan visits with relatives, give gifts to loved ones and have celebrations at home. If you're planning to move this holiday season, now is the time to prepare yourself for what will no doubt be a very hectic couple of months. These tips can help.

Start Packing and Planning As Early As Possible

Line up your moving company now and start packing as soon as possible. Get as much out of the way as you can before the holidays begin in earnest. Clear your schedule over the weekends and in the evenings to get things done. If you need to take time off work, now is the time to do so.

As the day of the move (and the holidays) draws near, you'll find yourself feeling busier and overwhelmed if you can't get the majority of the work done now.

Hire a Full-Service Moving Company

Hire a moving company that offers packing and unpacking services to take some of the pressure off you during this busy time. You may still choose to do some of your packing on your own, but hiring a moving company to do some packing for you will make the experience of moving a little bit less stressful and will give you time to focus on holiday planning.

Scale Back Holiday Celebrations at Home

You can't do everything. Given that you'll be dealing with movers, boxes, utility services, address updates, and all the other things that go along with moving, you won't have time to do all of your normal holiday celebrations at home. Sit down with your family and pick which celebrations to keep and which ones to forgo until next year.

If possible, plan to attend celebrations at the homes of friends and relatives. Even if you can't have the normal celebrations at your house, you'll still have a celebration somewhere with people you love.

Watch the Weather

One of the complicating factors at this time of year is the weather. Colorado Springs gets around 68 inches of snow annually, and much of Colorado is snowy throughout the winter. Keep your eye on the forecast throughout the season, especially as you draw close to your move date.

Maintain close contact with your moving company to ensure that they see no reason to change your move date due to poor weather.

Prioritize Packing

Packing and moving preparation will have to take priority over wrapping gifts and other holiday activities. This may mean that you'll have to buy more gift bags than normal, or you may have to pay for a gift wrapping service. Many gift wrapping services raise money for charity, so don't feel too bad if you have to pay someone else to wrap your presents. It's all in the spirit of giving.

Keep Decorations and Gifts Easy to Access

Keep holiday decorations in a go bag so that you can unpack them swiftly when you arrive at your new home. If you celebrate Christmas and your move takes place before December 25, put your tree up first thing when you arrive in your new home. This will make your house feel more comfortable and welcoming.

Coordinate with your movers to ensure that they keep your holiday-decorations go bag accessible during the move. Depending on how many decorations you have, you may not be able to put up them all, but you can at least put up your favorites.
